HERON01 Running Shoe

Footwear company Zellerfeld has partnered with designer Heron Preston, to manufacture a unique sneaker line. Calling it the “HERON01,” this slip-on running shoe has a seamless, circular design with no stitching or adhesives, allowing it to be fully recycled at the end of its use. The sneakers materials can be reused endlessly, but only a small number of pairs are being sold via a StockX raffle, so only a chosen few will get to sample them. Zellerfeld uses 3D printing to develop experimental footwear with novel unibody designs, that can be customized to meet individual wearers’ needs.

CEO Cornelius Shmitt gained industrial engineering experience from studying at the Clausthal University of Technology. By adopting his approach, he says that upcoming designers can enter short-run production without having to pay upfront for molds, or outsourcing production. Zellerfeld also markets its technology as a greener alternative to conventional footwear production processes, with the defense that 3D printed shoes are created with software, not assembly lines. The HERON01 is modeled to look like its namesake in the natural world. The sneaker’s scale-like aesthetics are meant to mimic those of a Heron’s feet, while the sole features a claw-life design. It has been reported that a limited run of the sneakers will later be made available via Zellerfeld this month.

4D Fusion Multicolor

There are a lot of doubts, and tough competition, but Adidas’ confidence in Carbon technology for midsoles have continued to pay off. Price points for some footwear models have dropped, and new models continue to come out, like the multi-colored 4D Fusion. Many new technologies are coming out, and 3D printed shoes will continue to improve. The 4D Fusion is a lightweight running sneaker with an upper made from Primeknit technology, which is ideal for automating the footwear manufacturing workflow. The upper’s color is a mixture of black, pink, and orange knits.

The 3D printed midsole of the 4D fusion is also multicolor. By using Carbon’s Digital Synthesis tech, the lattice weave of light and oxygen to create a workable resin appears thinner than other 4D products. While Adidas has started offering white and black colors 3D midsoles, a 4D Fusion presents a mix of colors with the white tip gradually changing to a new color, to match the upper.

Futurecraft STRUNG Footwear

Adidas has been known to push boundaries when it comes to designing and manufacturing shoes. The brand kicked off a campaign for sustainable manufacturing with the Parlay initiative, then move onto improving its manufacturing process with the 3D printed Alphaedge 4D sneaker. Adidas has combined many of the technologies into an all-new sneaker, the Adidas Futurecraft STRUNG. The team that created STRUNG was comprised of a small group dedicated to the project. The idea was inspired by architecture and the use of robotics to create new ways to build fiber structures and materials. The challenge with this idea was that it was to be designed and built from scratch. As a result, the team relied a lot on trial and error, but with a clear vision. The team initially started the project by building things by hand. This included prototypes and allowing the project to evolve naturally. The STRUNG material is not knitted and weaving, but the process was designed to place the yarn in any direction.

The process of development is still in the early stages. However, the Adidas Futurecraft STRUNG sneaker is the first milestone of many. The resulting upper is a lightweight design with a cocooned feel and fit. The shoe locks in the heel to prevent any slip. It also included stiffer and stronger red threads places at the midfoot, toebox, and heel. The midsole builds on the radical Adidas 4D lattice design. The team plans to use technology to achieve wonderful things. They want to be the platform that serves multiple sports, starting with running. Adidas has shown us amazing innovation in the world of 3D printed shoes. It may even benefit their idea for STRUNG shoes. Either way, I look forward to seeing the footwear they will bring.

Recently the Saucony Type A9 racing shoes ended up on the best running shoes list for T3. Saucony also released two brand new pairs of running shoes, the Triumph 17 and the Guide 13, which both utilize their PWRRUN technology. Running shoes come in made shapes and sizes, and the more innovative they are the more attention they get. The Triumph 17 is the most cushioned shoe to date. It is also 28 percent lighter than Saucony’s previous foam, which is never a bad thing, especially when going on longer runs. The shoe also uses FORMFIT which is Saucony’s 3D approach to a fit that consists of an underfoot cradle construction that is topped with cushioning that shapes to your feet. The Triumph 17 also uses a new type of geometry at the heel and toe. An engineered mesh upper with 3D printed overlays provides flexibility as well as structure. It also features a crystal rubber TRIFLEX outsole for easier transitions.

The Guide 13 concentrates on cushioning and is also aimed at short-range runners as well as marathon runners. The shoe’s use of PWRRUN technology helps provide underfoot cushioning. The 13 also includes a new TPU guidance frame which guides your feel through the gait cycle. The Triumph 17 comes in 3 different colors for men, and 3 colors for women. With the Guide 13 also coming in similar colors. I’m hoping to see that Saucon will feature more 3D printing in their shoes soon.

Recycled And Re-purposed Shoes

Each year billions of shoes are worn, fall apart, and then chucked into a landfill. About 300 million pairs of running shoes are thrown away in the UK alone. In an attempt to avoid this Adidas is using its factories to produce shoes that can be ground into pellets, melted down, and then made into new running trainers. They are calling this first shoe the Futurecraft Loop. The shoe does not look too different from any other. It is made with a foam midsole, and outer sole, a knitter upper, and insole, laces and a torsion bar for stability. The entire shoe is manufactured using a version of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

In order to recycle the shoe, Adidas has them washed and shipped to one of the plants of its industrial partner ASF. Once the shoes arrive, they are ground down into fine pellets and melted back to its original state to be turned back into a shoe. TPUs are a type of plastic considered to have elastic properties and are largely resistant to oil and grease. Before this, Adidas didn’t have one material it could use to make an entire shoe. The uppers of the running shoes were typically made from polyester. Although some shoes can already be recycled, Adidas’ effort uses the materials to make an entirely new shoe designed for performance.

Alphaedge 4D Sneakers

Adidas has created 3D printed vegan sneakers. After already having a successful collaboration Adidas and Stella McCartney have decided to work together again. Their goal is to produce an innovative 3D printed shoe for women. In the past, they created the world’s first sustainable activewear line made from ocean plastic, with Parley for the Oceans. The companies also worked together on a contemporary version of the Stan Smith sneakers. Both Parley and Stan Smith were successful, so the two companies wanted to approach something new, with vegan-friendly materials. These sneakers are called Adidas Alphaedge 4D and are based on a simple sock style. They were designed by Stella McCartney and 3D printed by the company Carbon.

Carbon’s Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) technology allows for high-grade materials to be combined with exceptional resolution and finish. Their CLIP technology was used with great success by Adidas and its Futurecraft 4D sneaker line. With the Alphaedge 4D Carbon’s technology was used to 3D print lattice-like midsole structures, which provide superior control and energy return when running. The 3D printed sneakers feature an off-white midsole, black mesh upper and are branded with “Stella McCartney” on the top. They are currently aimed at female consumers, but a version for men is in the making. The Alphaedge 4D x Stella McCartney 3D Printed sneakers are expected to go on sale on April 14^th and will retail at £399.95 in the UK.

Recently Nike released the Air Zoom Pegasus 35 FlyEase to the public, which includes a FlyEase zip closure system in the heel of the Zoom Pegasus shoe. The shoes were designed to make it easy for athletes to put them on or take them off. One of the best parts is that this feature does not take away from the functionality of the shoe. The Zoom Pegasus opens at the heel, which allows athletes to slide their foot horizontally into the back of the shoe. To put on the shoe, you pull a tab to unfasten a zip across the back of the ankle, peeling away the heel of the shoe.

Instead of regular laces, the shoe has a cord at the heel that secures a snug fit when you pull it. The shoes can be put on with one hand, allowing athletes with varying abilities to use them. Sprinters need to eliminate distractions so having shoes that are quick and easy to untie help. Nike also announced a pair of lace-less basketball shoes. The Adapt BB shoes tighten by the touch of a button or swipe of a smartphone. Last year the brand created the first running shoes with 3D printed uppers.

Nike’s Elite Running Shoe

Nike has prepared their 3D printed shoe, Zoom Vaporfly Elite Flyprint 3D for a wider release. The Flyprint 3D is an updated version of Nike’s famous 3D printed Zoom Vaporfly 4%. It was designed with help from Eluid Kipchoge, the winner of the Berlin marathon in 2018. This footwear company has worked towards perfecting the Vaporfly 4% since last year. By working again with Kipchoge they were able to create an updated version of the Zoom Vaporfly shoe. The name of the shoe gets the “4%” in its name because research found that wearing the Vaporfly can help runners gain 4% on their lead time.

The success of the 3D printed shoe inspired Nike’s footwear design team to meet up with Eliud Kipchoge. The Vaporfly Elite Flyprint 3D shoe is 11 grams lighter than the Vaporfly 4% was. The main focus was to make the running shoe function in wet conditions. The running shoe features a 3D printed upper, which prevents moisture from getting inside the shoe. We have noticed the fashion industry is continuing to provide customized solutions by using 3D printing for mass production. Many shoe companies are looking towards 3D printed footwear. I anticipate we will continue to see this, because of the many customization options, and the money it could save.
